ARTICLE: Where Is Our Heritage? By Oluwaseun Felix Ajayi

Where is our heritage?.

Africa is a continent  seen around the world as a place where hardwork is shadow by low initiative and continuity, people are of opinion that Africans have what it takes to be great among other continents in the world, the uniqueness of Africa has turn to what makes an African man ashamed been an African, the prosperity which should be our strength is gradually becoming our weaknesses, many wish to leave Africa and become a specimen in another man's land.
Before the colonization, an African man was glad to be attached to his land, see  something to beckon in his environment, the globalisation should be a change of  wrong humanity ideologies such as killing of twins, slavery, using  human for rituals, bad leadership, abuse of power etc, but bug recidivism saga has been the talk of the day in all ramifications.

Many scholars has argued that Africans are the problem of themselves, maybe they are wrong in some aspect but the question is where is our heritage? The attractive uniqueness in which people sees  in us as the beautiful market then,  where did we kept it?

The social economy world today has it root from Africa, because Africa providential input then contributed a larger potion to today's world economy, many nations who are behind Africans then are now above just because we neglected what we know best to do.

Africa is blessed with manpower and strength to carry out some hard labours which is always productive and progressive with determination especially under Africans roof.

Nigeria as giant of Africa, which have drawn most attentions to Africa in the global economy, has many strengths in many areas of life, economy, population, sport, education, military, Agriculture, culture etc the question now is that, is Nigeria still a giant?

History own the best for Nigeria rather than present because the glory of the past  is more reasonable and rich in quality and quantity than the one we are experiencing.
Before the invention of petroleum in Nigeria which now serve as the one major source of economy booster in Nigeria, many regions and states are known for something unique and specific production in which the citizens enjoyed life at reasonable length because we are not ashamed of been ourselves then.

Agriculture in Nigeria is a major source of income for the nation, it earned a lot of money through exportation, in which everyone that engaged in it then  made a better life for themselves and invested for the future.

The northern part of the country are good in farming, due to the nature of their weather and type of soil they have, the type of crops  they can plant varies yet the production of the opportune crops was massive, the major crops grown in the region are millet, rice, sorghum and cowpea while groundnut and sesame are significant minor crops.  These varieties of crops serves as important supplement to diet especially during the time of food shortage. They fed themselves and even have reserve to export which helped in  development of Nigerian economy then.

Nigeria was the world's largest country exporting  groundnut in 1970s, the northerners are globally know for their groundnut pyramid.

Eastern part of Nigeria was known to major in producing palm oil and palm kernel, history has it that oil factory has been in calabar in 1800s, they had the capacity of producing for the people in the state and export part of it which contributed to the Nigerian economy.

Findings revealed that people in this region engaged in both crops and livestocks production. Intercropping was the dominant cropping system with cassava, yam, and maize as the principal arable crops, while cocoa, kolanut, oil palm, rubber, cashew, banana/plantain and citrus were the main permanent crops.

The western part of Nigeria is known to be lover of farming, the ideology they carry is that one is a lazy man if that person can't engage in farming activities, that's the reason  educated souls among them engage in petty farming.

They grow many crops of many varieties, crops of many kind, annual, berenial, or permanent crops.

Cocoa has been what Yoruba makes money from, in which many of their leaders today was sponsored in school here in Nigeria even oversea, then, many people are independent with  less pressure on the government, because they can still provide what they eat.

Western Nigeria also major in production of rubber, cotton, palm oil, plantain, timber etc which a lot of money was realised from it then,  but here we are today, hunger is a threat to  farmers in Nigeria, our legacy is becoming our far relatives.

The incessant growth of the world population, which Nigeria is not excluded necessitate an increase in agricultural activities to meet the food demand from a growing human population. This demand should put more pressure on agriculture in Nigeria, the people and the government should give importance to it because every nation needs food production if the goal of surviving will be achieved.

Food is a necessity for human if he chose to live and necessary steps should be taken to ensure continuity of human existence.
The today agricultural setting in Nigeria is shabby and less impressive. Oil discovery in Nigeria shifted our attention from agriculture to a quick source of revenue. It is time the government realize that agriculture is a ministry which more attention should be given to  because the inability to invest in agriculture will tell like this time of pandemic. Individuals should start engaging in farming either crops or livestock production.

With the daily increase in human population, government should realise that more hands are needed in the agricultural sector, government should erase the motive that agriculture should be privatized, that every of their input must come back as gain, they should start realizing the fact that the welfare of their citizens is their priority because food is the number one on human welfare list.

Technology has make things more easier, mechanized farming should be the next step of action for every states after this fight against corona virus, because we don'tknows what the future holds, if this type of farming is employed,  government should also design a preservative method for the crops to avoid wastage and for future uses.

This type of development will bring more good to the state and the citizens because State will own a means to give back to the people when situations requires and the citizens will be gainfully employed because machine can't operate itself,  human does. There are many capable hands which are good in agricultural fields but there's no platform for them  to showcase their abilities.

Nigeria can be great again in the agricultural sector if the round peg is put in the round hole. Stay safe.
